The Patapsco River Mesohaline (PATMH) segment, or Baltimore Harbor estuary, is located on the west side of the upper Chesapeake Bay about miles from the Virginia Capes at the entrance to the Bay. The Harbor estuary is the mile tidal region of the lower Patapsco River. Maryland was thus the third state in the Union to establish a program of scientific forest management, and, almost immediately, our present system of state parks began as an offshoot of the that forestry program. Recent and projected population growth in southern Maryland continues to bring ground-water-quality and quantity issues to the forefront. Lithologic, borehole geophysical, water-level, and water-use data were compiled and interpreted to revise understanding of the hydrogeologic framework of the Piney Point-Nanjemoy, Aquia, and Upper Patapsco aquifers in southern Maryland, with emphasis on the. Patapsco (pətăp`skō), river, c mi ( km) long, formed in central Md. by the confluence of the North Branch (c mi/70 km long) and the South Branch and flowing SE into Chesapeake Bay at lower river is tidal and forms a wide estuary on which Baltimore's harbor installations and industrial suburbs (including Sparrows Point) are located.

The MD 8-digit Patapsco LNB watershed is located in the Patapsco River region of the Chesapeake Bay watershed within Maryland. The watershed covers portions of Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll and Howard Counties and Baltimore City, and includes portions of the towns of Randallstown, Ellicott City, Catonsville, Arbutus, Elkridge, and Hanover.
This zone and Zone III (lower Cenomanian) have been assigned to the Early Cretaceous Elk Neck beds of the Patapsco Formation. The interval logged between ft and ft is composed of two pebbly sands of fluvial origin separated by a ft micaceous, light-gray or yellowish-gray, silty clay.

Ground-water modeling and optimization studies identified scenarios that could reduce drawdown in the Lower Patapsco and Patuxent aquifers while meeting projected water demands. The potentiometric surface was as high as feet above sea level near the northwestern boundary and outcrop area of the aquifer in northern Anne.
